Business Valuation & Damages Valuations
Business Valuation & Appraisal
Business valuation is also called business appraisal, depending on the credentials of the analyst performing the work. Business valuations are used for many purposes including family law, business law, estate planning, tax and other financial reporting, for corporate planning and purchases or sales of businesses. We have performed valuations for all of these purposes.
The quality of your business valuation can vary greatly with the experience and qualifications of the analyst. Not all credentials are equal in the amount of experience and education required to obtain the credential.
Our partners are Accredited Senior Appraisers with the American Society of Appraisers.
This accreditation requires the most education and hours of training under a senior appraiser of any of the business valuation credentials. Before receiving the credential, appraisers also have to submit a report to be reviewed and approved by the Board of Governors.
We have prepared business valuations for businesses in multiple countries, but primarily, throughout the United States. Our partners have appraised businesses in almost every industry ranging in size from start-ups to hundreds of millions in revenue. We work closely with our clients to understand their businesses in order to generate the most accurate and defensible reports we are able.
Estate Planning & Divorce Proceedings Valuations
Almost daily, we prepare business valuations for estate planning or gifting, marital divorces and business law purposes. Business valuations are needed for divorces when a husband and wife own a business, or when either the husband or wife owns a business that was formed during the marriage. After preparing a report, we will typically attend mediations, settlement conferences, hearings and trial as requested by our clients and their attorneys. We are also asked to review and prepare rebuttal reports of opposing experts’ reports.
For estate purposes, business valuations are needed for planning, gifting, transfers of interest, bankruptcy and distribution of an estate when someone passes away. A common type of entity we appraise for estate purposes is a family limited partnership.
Business Damages Valuations
Business valuations are used in business litigation cases for reasons such as damages calculations. Another common reason we are asked to prepare business valuation reports is for litigation between business partners who cannot agree on a buyout amount. We have prepared damages calculations in business litigation cases in multiple counties in Texas.
